Inspired by those classic Nintendo style arcade
dungeon crawlers, SDE looks awesome and is packed with evocative artwork
and great figure design. But that's only half the story...
Big Sexy Orange Dungeon... |
My mate Pete over at Inquisitor James blog spot has been
posting a whole host of great SDE articles, covering everything from
getting started to looking at all the different characters and how
they operate in the game. Go check em’ out!
Feeling inspired, I met up with Pete and his
brother Olly for an evening of SDE action and it was a blast! Beneath the
cutesy anime styling, there’s a great game waiting to be explored and once
you work out the different levels
of interaction between the heroes and minions, it opens up a
whole bunch of challenging, tactical options...
Images do not reflect... |
Pete played the role of the Dark Consul -
Controlling the dungeon's dastardly denizens, supported by the
formidable mini boss Rock Gut the Troll and the mighty end of level
Dungeon Boss, Starfire the Dragon... :(
STARFIRE! Is it a boy? is it a girl? either way, it looks effin' angry! |
Olly and I played a 3 Hero band of mighty
adventurers - A complimentary team-up of 'close combat monster'
in the shape of the Starguild Sapper, 'range and remedy' delivered by
the Glimmerdusk Ranger and 'buff and boost' in the pink glitz form of Princess
Ruby :)
The threesome we've all been dreaming of... |
After the adventurers had stood firm
against several waves of smaller gribblies and managed to find some cool loot
and treasure bonuses to boost their stats, they faced off against
the mighty Rock Gut. Luckily, the Starguild Sapper made short work of what
could have been a very sticky situation, as he stood firm and hammered the
troll into the ground with just a few swings of his Astral Hammer!
But joy soon turned to despair as all that
creature bashing had sent the action tracker rocketing up to '32 Bit' status
and signalled the arrival of the Dungeon Boss...
Starfire the Dragon arrived crashing through the
dungeon, burning anything and everything in his (her?) path! The brave
adventurers suddenly looked a little less brave and opted for a rather swift
tactical withdrawl!
Tactical withdrawal! |
After several turns hiding behind pillars
and desperately trying to boost their health stats, the heroes came
to the conclusion that there was no death without glory and decided to charge
the dragon in a final act of heroic defiance...
With some fortunate dice rolls and some
great tactical moves by Olly, the heroes miraculously came out of the fight
triumphant! - The Glimmerdusk Ranger landing the final blow with an arrow
through Starfires' heart (that's what I like to think anyway)
Crystalia - A Super Dungeon Explorer's dream! |
SDE is a truly great game and makes a
welcome change of pace from those games of 40k. I'm looking forward to playing
again and seeing how we do with the increase up to a 5 hero party...
My thanks to Pete and Olly for introducing me to
SDE and showing me the ropes. If you get the chance to get a game in, I highly
recommend it ;)
